Mayor Garcetti Delivers L.A.’s Second Voluntary Local Review on Global Development Goals

This second report details the steps Los Angeles has taken towards creating a more equitable and prosperous City in line with the global Sustainable Development Goals

Mayor Eric Garcetti announced  Los Angeles’ progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a shared development agenda unanimously adopted by the United Nations in 2015 to better meet the needs of people, protect the planet, and ensure equitable prosperity.

“From the beginning of our journey, I’ve said that these goals cannot be achieved by Los Angeles alone,” said Mayor Eric Garcetti, “Everyone is part of this agenda — cities, nations, civil society, workers, companies. Only through our collective efforts can we build a fair and sustainable future for our world.”

Los Angeles’ 2021 Voluntary Local Review builds on the City’s first report in 2019, and highlights new policies, programs, and initiatives across all 17 Global Goals. L.A.’s work to realize the SDGs is rooted in community-based partnerships and action and includes efforts to fight inequality and poverty, reinforce safety-net programs, and demonstrate sustainable development. Guided by L.A. 's Green New Deal, the City is also leading the way forward in water conservation and developing affordable, clean energy and transportation solutions.

To address food insecurity, poverty and homelessness, the City partnered with the Mayor’s Fund for Los Angeles (MFLA) to launch the Angeleno Connect Card which provides direct cash assistance to Angelenos most in need and suffering from the impacts of the pandemic. The City has also taken bold steps to ensure Angelenos remain housed, developing policies to protect them from evictions, provide rental assistance, and strengthen the City’s Rent Stabilization Ordinance. 

This report highlights the importance of place-based solutions, and shares narratives around how the City is using both data and lived experience to improve public services, focusing on housing insecurity, L.A.’s path to 100% renewable energy, and restorative justice-centered initiatives. 

With support from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation and the MFLA, Mayor Garcetti launched L.A.’s efforts on the SDGs in late 2017. Since then, the City has developed an OpenSDG Data Reporting Platform, an SDG Activities Index, two Voluntary Local Reviews, and engaged over 160 students through vibrant academic partnerships with five local universities: Occidental College, University of Southern California, Arizona State University, University of California Los Angeles, and the Claremont Colleges.
