Mayor Garcetti announces new partnership to expand youth job opportunities in manufacturing

 Mayor Eric Garcetti kicked off Manufacturing Week with a new drive to equip young Angelenos with the tools they need to secure good, middle-class manufacturing jobs, as part of a partnership between the City of Los Angeles, the Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute (CESMII), and the Youth Policy Institute (YPI). “Young Angelenos from all backgrounds deserve to find their passion, discover their talents, and get good-paying jobs that put them on a path to the middle class,” said Mayor Eric Garcetti. “This partnership will give them the tools and training they need put that opportunity within reach.” Since taking office in 2013, Mayor Garcetti has put a hard focus on strengthening working families and the middle class. Under his leadership, unemployment has been cut in half and 162,000 new jobs have been created. Support for manufacturing industries and technology firms have resulted in L.A. being named one of the world’s top 10 leading startup ecosystems, as well as the #1 Digital City in America. The partnership announced today will build on that record and result in the creation of a 10,000 square foot Cyber MakerSpace — a facility equipped with cutting-edge manufacturing technologies, which will provide local youth with the resources required to succeed in advanced manufacturing jobs. As part of the partnership, YPI’s YouthSource Center, funded and overseen by the City, will train 300 young Angelenos in predictive analytics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and robotics. Graduates of the program will be ready to start a career in smart manufacturing or pursue higher education in those fields. “The LA Cyber MakerSpace will showcase how innovation in manufacturing happens — through a transformative effort to simplify how hardware, software, and people work together,” said John Dyck, CESMII CEO. The LA Cyber MakerSpace, which will open by Spring 2019, will be located in the heart of the Los Angeles Promise Zone. It will be co-located with YPI’s YouthSource Center, which annually serves hundreds of youth who have dropped out of school and are not working. The Center helps these young people complete their high school education, enter post-secondary pathways, or secure job training and employment. “Manufacturing has a long history in LA and has built up our middle class. Today, advanced manufacturing is transforming the industry and creating new opportunities for underrepresented populations to build careers in STEM fields,” said Dixon Slingerland, YPI President & CEO. “We are looking forward to working with the City and CESMII to build a space to provide youth career opportunities in advanced manufacturing.” The initial cohort of students will come from existing YPI programs, including YouthSource Center, TechHire, Women in Tech, Diversity in Tech, and Young Professionals. The Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute operates as a UCLA program and has its national headquarters at WeWork’s Century City location. In partnership with the City of Los Angeles and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Manufacturing Office, CESMII brings together a consortium of nearly 100 partners from across academia, industry, and non-profits and over $140 million in public-private investment — hailing from more than thirty states.
For more than 30 years, Youth Policy Institute (YPI) has offered a holistic approach to breaking the cycle of intergenerational poverty in Los Angeles by ensuring access to high-quality K-12 education, workforce training, and essential support services for youth and families. Through signature place-based strategies like the Los Angeles Promise Zone and Promise Neighborhoods, YPI operates more than 130 program with 1,600 staff and reaches more than 115,000 youth and adults annually.
